The Lion (Panthera leo), King of the jungle. A male lions mane is highly distinctive, making it one of the most recognizable animals, and a popular symbol in human culture.
Lions live for ten to fourteen years in the wild, while in captivity they can live longer than twenty years. In the wild, males seldom live longer than ten years, as injuries sustained from continual fighting with rival males greatly reduce their longevity.
Lions are unusually social animals for cats. Typically living in families, and females doing most of the hunting.
Estimates of the African lion population range between 16,500 and 47,000 living in the wild in 2002–2004, down from early 1990s estimates that ranged as high as 100,000. Primary causes of the decline include disease and human interference.
